Is Lionel Messi Getting Undue Advantage From Use Of HGH?
The name “Lionel Messi” is one that practically all true football (soccer) fans will be familiar with. Many people will argue that he is the best player in the sport at the moment, if not of all times.
Those who have had the opportunity of reading about the FC Barcelona star would be aware that he received human growth hormone (HGH). This is a controversial substance that has been banned in almost all sports for its performance-enhancing effect.
It might make some persons to wonder whether the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would have been so phenomenal without the HGH benefits that he enjoys. Is the hormone the real difference maker? Continue reading.
HGH also knows as Human Growth Hormone and Somatotropin is a natural substance produced by the pituitary gland. It is necessary for growth and development. You need it to build, maintain and repair tissue in your brain and other organs in your body.
Young children and adolescents need the hormone the most. Anyone without sufficient amount will be unable to reach full adult height. Young people with medically low levels are said to suffer growth hormone deficiency (GHD).
Adults can have deficiency issues as well.
But growing taller isn’t the only benefit this hormone has to offer. It helps to build muscle mass, increase energy levels, burn body fat and enhance your looks. Cognitive enhancement is also among its many other benefits.
Problems a person can have with low levels include:
- Stunted growth
- Delayed puberty
- Increased body fat
- Lean muscle loss
- Reduced bone density
- Memory loss
- Sexual dysfunction
Low levels are usually treated with somatropin, or synthetic HGH. This is given through injections.
Messi and HGH
As a young boy, this renowned Argentine footballer was diagnosed with GHD. This led to idiopathic short stature. He was only 4 feet 2 inches at the time of the diagnosis around the age of 11.
Doctors said he’d never be able to grow taller than 4 feet 7 inches if he failed to undergo treatments.
Messi recalled in his book that he was always the shortest at school and on the pitch.
His parents couldn’t afford the costs of HGH injections. Famous local football clubs River Plate and Newell’s Old Boys weren’t ready to foot the bills despite the apparent talents of the prodigy.
FC Barcelona signed Messi at 13 after agreeing to pay for his treatments.
The effect of the medical treatments is obvious today. The football superstar now stands at about 5 feet 7 inches.
Is HGH the Secret of Messi’s Greatness?
Today, many football fans compare Messi to greats of the game such as Brazilian Pele and fellow Argentine Diego Maradona. But some people think his fame is more because of his use of HGH.
Growth hormone is a known performance enhancer. Its use is banned by practically all major sports bodies. World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) started testing for it in 2004.
But Messi used the hormone for a medical purpose, which is permitted. He needed it to correct a physical deficiency as a young boy. His doctor did not administer it simply for gaining an advantage in sport.
It is not clear if the FC Barcelona star continued to receive HGH as an adult. The hormone is supposedly incapable of making a person grow taller once the epiphyseal or growth plates fuse after puberty. Therefore, it makes no sense that he should be allowed to continue receiving the hormone.
Messi has never been found guilty of using HGH as a performance enhancer.
The anti-doping code of world football governing body, FIFA, allows use of HGH on medical grounds. It is not clear if Messi got a waiver under this provision because his idiopathic short stature problem is no longer an issue.
However, it is rather arguable that HGH contributed to the player’s greatness. He would have been shorter and slower without those treatments. His skills have a connection to his increased height.
In addition, growth hormone is known to enhance mental health and speed up recovery after heavy workouts and injury. It is, therefore, possible that HGH plays a role in his self-belief and confidence.
